If you built it from scratch, it'll configure to go in /usr/local/bin 
by default, so the README lies. I'd highly recommend you *don't* 
install to /usr/bin over the top of the Apple Python (or if you do, 
when you're done reinstate the symlink to make python2.3 the default).
