I wouldn't explicitly discourage it.. I would rather have the page
state that it's focus is to recommend and support users of a
particular framework distribution of Python, and that the information
may not apply to other sources of Python such as from Fink or
DarwinPorts.

The extension problem (on win32 and Mac OS X anyway) is going to be
fixed by setuptools sooner than later... it just needs some more time.
