Sounds like you're using OS X 10.3. It shipped with pythonw as a
shell script, not an executable. You need to point it at the actual
binary:
/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/Resources/
Python.app/Contents/MacOS/Python
If you upgrade to 10.4, this should work.
