why not just use the standard binary?

That's odd -- I didn't think the source distro installed into "System". 
Are you sure you're not using Apple-supplied one? Are you on 10.5?

anyway, I'm sorry I can't help with a self-built one -- i have no idea 
what extra issues there may be.
