This is just one method; one would have to establish which method is
currently most popular, and see if it viable to implement that
instead.  However, *any* established method would be a good first
experiment.

In order to participate in GSoC, we ask that you participate in the
project beforehand (e.g., by fixing bugs).  Once you've established a
working relationship with the team, odds are much greater for being
selected.
