Thanks Robert and Arnd. You are right, it was a subversion problem. Sorry for 
the noise.

(For anyone interested, I was using subversion 1.2.3, and there was an 
incompatibility with neon-0.25.3. Dropping back to neon-0.24.7 and 
reinstalling subversion cleared things up.)
