This is OT, but in case it saves others time, here goes.
After trying lots of different things, finally I settled on
sudo wlassistant
as my wifi connection tool. It's the only one of all the half-working
tools shipped in Edgy that so far has reliably, 100% of the time, been
able to find any available wireless networks and connect to them.
Just apt-get it if you don't have it installed, it's a KDE tool so it
may pull in some dependencies for you if you don't have the KDE libs
already.
