Nah, it's more likely a bug of some sort. The conversion functions are written 
in C, and the transformation from C arrays back to MaskedArrays is a bit 
flaky. We should spend some time on polishing that up. Please fill some kind 
of bug report, or contact us off-list with as much info as you can. Please 
note that I won't be able to try anything before next week, however...
