Category: pop3proxy
Group: Binary 1.0rc2
Status: Closed
Resolution: Accepted
Priority: 6
Submitted By: LesHauSsebons (leshaussebons)
Assigned to: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin)
Summary: WinXP / Server connexion refused

Initial Comment:
Used 9 version since today, installed the 1.0 release
candidate, with same settings.

Now when I try to connect to the spambayes server (
local ) , it returns me a "connexion refused" message, for
any of the pop account proxies I have setted ( nothing
changes on the client computers )

Great, glad to hear it is working for you!

The additional restriction was added after someone pointed
out that we were not preventing remote connections to the
proxy ports, and that the SMTP proxy in particular could
then be used as an open relay.

By default, SpamBayes does not allow connections except from
the local machine. If you want to allow connections from
other machines on your network, do right-click
"Configure...", scroll to the bottom of the page, and click
the "Advanced Configuration" button.

Near the bottom of the advanced page you will find a total
of 3 boxes labeled "Allowed remote connections". The first
is a little ways up from the bottom of the page, followed by
several other options, followed by 2 at the very bottom of
the page.

The help text for the first box refers simply to "Remote
connections", and you should set this to the machines that
you want to have access to the Web UI. The help text for the
second box refers to "Remote POP connections", and you
should set it to the machines that you want to be able to
connect through the POP3 proxy for retrieving mail. Unless
you are proxying SMTP traffic for training, you will not
need to change the third one.

*****************************
What is the TIME_WAIT statement ?
Local Ips are from my other computers ( 3 & 206 )

Netstat and the task list show that spamB is up and listening.

I tryied a telnet localhost 4700
*****************************
+OK POP3 server ready (7.0.028) <3E9BBACFAB(...sessioninfo..
.)44FDD764761EE at mx.laposte.net>

Working !

Then I try a telnet 192.168.0.1 4700 from any computer on
the lan I get
****************************
-ERR Connection not allowed

Perte de la connexion à l'hôte.

Appuyez sur une touche pour continuer...
******************************************
( connection to host lost, press a key to go on ... )

I tryied to turn my firewall off, does the same.

The 0.9 version is still working fine, same ports, same config.
Is there some configuration to do in spambayes to grant
access from LAN machines ?

It works fine with the 0.9 and still hangs - for me - with the
newer versions.

Have something changed in the way it uses network ? maybe
windows doesn't like it much. Well, I hope I am not the only
one with this soucy ...

I try to help you finding the cure :) , Anyway I plan to set a
w2000 server instead of my old xp pro, so the bug may won't
exist in some weeks ... Hope we could fix it before.

Sounds like SpamBayes is not running. Check in Windows Task
Manager and see if the sb_tray process is running. You can
also go to a Windows Command Prompt and enter the command
"netstat -a", and look to see if anyone is listening on port
4700.

One other possibility is that you have a personal firewall
of some sort (such as XP's Internet Connection Firewal) that
is blocking access to the port.

What happens if you telnet to localhost:4700? Do you manage
to connect, or does it also fail?

I will look at this on Monday, but am away this weekend (and
it's late on Friday here right now, so can't do it now). So
feel free to drop back to the old version until then.

here is the log

Service not availible. Using thread.
Loading database... Listener on port 4700 is proxying pop.
laposte.net:110
Listener on port 4701 is proxying pop.free.fr:110
Listener on port 4702 is proxying pop.lost-oasis

nothing special, I noticed I had the same log while working.

I can't download any mail, as the messenger ( thunderbird, and
I had the same stuff with another one ) tells me : unable to
connect to server, the server returned an error : ( blank )

On any account, any port.

( I installed the rc2 )

still aware or this problem but haven't the courage to re-install
the jamming version on my computer, as I use the anti-spam
functions actively.

I set back the older version that remained working fine for me .
..

Answer to previous post : yeah the settings were the same,
and were kept. I also tryied to re-enter them. Will try to install
the newer version soon, I swear, as I really want to help you
with fixing this odd bug

We haven't heard from the original reporter of the bug for some
time. Without the requested information, there really isn't much
we can do. If anyone does provide further information, please
also change the bug status back to "Open".

If you open the configuration page, does it still have the
server values there?

Could you attach your log file to this tracker? The
troubleshooting guide explains where to find that.
