Rather than going to the effect of creating another branch and committing
it, you might as well just post a patch here.  That way other interested
people can try it (I will, at least) and report on their results, without
having to fiddle about with branches and so on (and we don't end up with
another branch, which is only for this one thing).

If it does appear to be broadly useful, then we can add it (to the HEAD) as
an experimental option, and try and convince people to try it out after the
next release.
