Have you tried

    /usr/local/spambayes/hammie.py -d -p ~/newhammie.db

?  If so, does it succeed?  Perhaps your default database file can't be
created.  You can see what your default is by executing

    /usr/local/spambayes/hammie.py --help

and noting the text for the -p flag.
