Please let me know even if you are just thinking about doing a talk. I'd like to get an idea of where we stand as far an needing content for PyTexas. By the way, it might be fun at PyTexas to start a game of "Cells", whose gameplay involves players writing Python code. It's described as a "massively multi-agent Python programming game". http://phonons.wordpress.com/2010/06/01/cells-a-massively-multi-agent-python-programming-game/ The London Python user group recently played: http://ramblings.timgolden.me.uk/2010/07/02/dojo-attack/ Does anyone want to volunteer to organize a game of this at PyTexas? Can anyone help wrangle some additional speakers? I know we can get some excellent speakers if we pick up the phone and call our local Python community luminaries and ask them what talk they might want to give. Of course, YOU can give a talk as well, luminary or no. Last year we arranged some excellent talks at the last minute, so I know it's not too late. And of course, we can also rely on unconference-style open space talks, as well as lightning talks, to fill some of the time. We need to send out occasional reminders for people to be thinking about what lightning talks to give. We could really use some beginner talks and tutorials. Sometime in August students are going to start finding out about PyTexas and we'll get a last minute rush. Folks, please help out by rabble rousing your local Python user group and try to get us more talk proposals. Thanks! It's a beginner level class where we write 2 simple games, Hi/Lo (guess a secret number) and hangman. It's designed as a 60-minute class but could go 90-minutes pretty easily. --greg -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The survey is not really closed yet, and we may get a flood of students in August. However for the results to be useful we should probably go ahead and interpret what we have now. We can revisit again later if there is a flood of new respondents. Thanks for working on this Arthur. I took a look at your spreadsheet the other day for a few minutes but had trouble understanding it. I'm jammed up at work and don't have a lot of time to study these results. Maybe at some point we could have an IRC meeting to discuss the summary results, and include other PyTexas organizers. Anytime this weekend would be a good time for me. Will you be available? If anyone is interested in helping analyze the survey results, please let Arthur and I know, and one of us will send you the survey results links. Let's plan for an IRC meeting sometime this weekend to discuss the results and cover any other PyTexas organization issues still pending. We also need to work on the schedule. Template uses reStructuredText format: http://docutils.sourceforge.net/rst.html Debugging in Python =================== :Type: hands-on tutorial :Presenter: J Cameron Cooper :Python level: beginner to intermediate Description ----------- Learn to love (and use) the cryptic but incredibly useful 'pdb' module. Try the three different ways to get into the debugger, insert breakpoints, step through code, examine and move up and down the stack, and more. Also, working in the interactive interpretter and using the 'logging' module. Extended description -------------------- This session will help any Python progammer learn some basic but non-obvious tools of the trade, specifically the interactive debugger and logging. Mostly for beginners and others who've never gotten into pdb, but those with only limited pdb usage may also benefit. Rather than a talk, I plan to have everyone do it themselves, which should provide for better learning. I will provide some simple programs to debug, and walk through the most useful techniques of pdb and friends. Probably will not be able to cover all the commands in time allotted, but should be able to get all the important stuff. Outline ------- I. How are you debugging? a. Staring at it? b. Print? 1. watch out for Python 3 c. Interactive Console (if you didn't know...) II. A better way: pdb a. Get some code to debug b. pdb reference online, and other good articles c. Get into pdb session the easiest way: pdb.set_trace() 1. how it works and what we can do 2. interactive help with 'help' 3. leaving with 'quit' 4. repeating with blank lines d. Examine the environment 1. show location with 'list' 2. print values with 'p' (and whithout) 3. see args with 'args' 4. execute statements 5. look at stack with 'where' e. Move around 1. go forward with 'step', 'next' 2. fast-forward with 'return', 'continue', and 'until' 3. go back with 'jump' f. The stack 1. printing the stack with 'where'... and what it means 2. navigating the stack with 'up' and 'down' g. Other ways into pdb 1. multple 'set_trace' 2. after a crash: post-mortem with 'pm' and 'post_mortem' a. interactive b. as exception handling 3. without error or source changes: 'run', 'runeval', and 'runcall' a. setting breakpoints with 'break' and 'tbreak' b. managing breakpoints with 'clear', 'disable', 'enable' c. skipping breakpoints with 'condition' and 'ignore' d. hooking into breakpoints with 'commands' e. restarting with 'run' III. Logging a. When it's useful - production and tight loops b. Get some code to log c. logging reference online d. use with Zope (and other frameworks) e. configure logging i. default location ii. to a file iii. changing levels f. place statements in code g. advanced logging options Bio --- J Cameron Cooper is an independent web developer (and sometimes trainer) specializing in Plone, Zope, and Python. He threw off the shackles of Algol-derived languages and began working with Python when Zope 1.10 came out in 1999. I'll be travelling on Thursday and Friday, so a weekend meeting works best for me. I'm planning to work on the schedule this Saturday as well, and maybe do more publicity work, especially along the lines of getting us more swag. Anybody who wants to work with me on this can join the #dfwpython irc channel on Freenode this Saturday; I'll be on and off all day. We can set meeting times if anyone is interested. As far as questions about the data go, here are a few: * How many attending beginners have no programming experience? * What is the percentage breakdown of t-shirt sizes for confirmed attendees, and for "maybe" attendees * Put together a list of "maybe" attendees who filled out email addresses, so we can follow up and find out if they are planning to attend. Hopefully once the schedule materializes decisions will be made. * Put together a list of email addresses of respondents who were professors and students, so I can contact them to see if they can help spread the word. * Help me understand the spreadsheet you created showing the comparative interest breakdowns of beginners/non-beginners. (Hopefully we can discuss that over IRC or phone) * Identify cities which don't have a Python user group, and respondents indicated an interest. Maybe we can help them get the group started, and PyTexas would be a good opportunity to meet and discuss that. It's only a month away, and it would be a good time to review the talk proposals and put together a draft of the schedule. We can also go over the survey results, work on summoning swag, and start putting together the list of random needful to-dos. I've cc'd the wider PyTexas mailing list to invite remote attendees to join the discussion on IRC and possibly a conference call if there is enough interest. Sorry about that...I hadn't realized it was past midnight when I got around to pressing "send" on that email. I was referring to the regular DFW Python meeting which occurs on Saturday from 2pm-6pm, and often carries on later with a group dinner. Those who join on IRC will miss the verbal part of the conversation, but those of us attending in person will be checking the IRC periodically to respond. Also, I can setup a conference call if there's enough interest, using my iPhone, an external speaker, and webex if screen sharing is needed. (Webex for Linux users requires installing Java). We have some good proposals and several speakers are flexible about changing content or doing additional talks. Here is a working draft of the PyTexas 2010 schedule: http://pytexas.org/EventSchedule2010 The links within the schedule don't work yet, and I hope someone will volunteer to take on the job of building a summary page listing all the talks, similar to the way the links work for PyOhio. http://www.pyohio.org/2010/Schedule The talk proposals so far formally submitted are here. Not every talk listed on the schedule has been formally submitted as of yet. http://pytexas.org/TalkProposals2010 We still have some TBAs in the schedule, and I think we need more strong technical topics. Both Jeff Rush and Chris Austin have indicated flexibility in doing a talk various subjects. The survey results indicate a high interest in "Python Advanced Concepts", even from beginners new to Python.
