The latter I would recommend against.  I often set stage to
'committed/rejected' when I set a ticket to pending, and I think that
provides useful information since it differentiates it from a ticket set
to pending because the submitter hasn't provided a reproducible test case.

But that's IMO, of course :), especially considering that I have
at least once set the stage and forgotten to set close.
