Yeah, felt a bit too restrictive to me too.  It's not a major issue
nor a RFE I'd argue about, so much so I already submitted a patch
without this part :)

I usually do opposite, forgetting to set stage on closing. But it
causes no real issues, so let's drop the auto-thing.
