[Tutor] printing columns

I have a list of around 650 or so items.  I would like to be able to
print them in columns, three across, like so:

item1		item2		item3
item4		item5		item6
item7		item8		item9

Any suggestions on a clean way to accomplish this?  The items will be of
varying width, so just adding tabs won't reliably format them.
