However, the above "discovery" is exactly what the 
docs suggest for defining a regular expression across
multi-lines -- something I thought was acknowledged
at the top of this thread (not sure):

  re.compile("[A-Za-z_]"       # letter or underscore
             "[A-Za-z0-9_]*"   # letter, digit or underscore

So I haven't added anything new here.  Oh well.
