I second the recommendation for Programming Pearls
In act there are 2 books 'PP' and 'More PP'

They don't use C much its nearly all awk(altho I 
haven't seen the latest editions(c1999) I have 
the late '80s editions. They are mines of gold on
anything to do with performant computation and 
also representation of data and documentation.

The chapter on the unix 'spell' program is 
wonderful! In fact they are all pretty good.
