Vice grips - with a c.

But there are various types and they all have specific 
names too. I'm not sure which variety you mean.

A google search reveals that there are a few types 
in the US too... all called vise grips... :-)

The most commonly shown are known here as 
mole-grips (don't ask me why!)

And my electronics cataloge has them listed 
as the rather prosaic "locking pliers"
