When I'm retrieving items I use retrbinary for eg.
from ftplib import FTP
ftp = FTP(url, username, password)
for filename in ftp.nlst(''):
ftp.retrbinary('RETR %s' % filename, open(filename, 'wb').write)
ftp.delete(filename)
ftp.close()
