Hi,
Since you are an electronics guy, how about a circuit simulator?You can start very simple with a power source and a light and show how the current flows.Add resistors and other bodies later. You could use pygame for the drawing and animation.I have been thinking of a simple app like that lately but I am don't have any former background in electronics and the know how, but I think it would be a great teaching tool and fun project.

Well, that's not bad but I wish it should be something interesting... 
Actually, I have an idea to develop a multiplayer game (where friends connect across internet.. ) The problem is that, I don't know network/ socket programming. which itself takes a lot of time to learn.. : (
