Subject: [Python Wpg] Remember, WinniPUG meeting in 2 weeks
Message-ID: <db6e78040901140652j5b49bda2w510e7caf024b3204@mail.gmail.com>

Our next meeting is January 28th, two weeks from now, at the UW
(details at http://WinniPUG.ca). I'll be presenting a preview of my
PyCon 2009 talk. Below is the talk advertisement.

Stuart.

If you start your own company or run your own project you can usually
choose the programming language, but if you work for a large company
there are probably architects and others who keep a tight rein on
approved technology. How do you steer a big ship towards dynamic
programming languages, and how fast can it turn?

Come hear the story of one software developer employee who in 20
months facilitated the adoption of Python as the standard scripting
language for an enterprise with 25,000 employees. Leave with ideas for
advancing dynamic programming languages in your workplace, and with
hope that change is possible.

Guido opened a new blog to write the history and his idea when
creating Python. There is 4 articles right now. Guido doesn't post
very fast. So it's a good time to follow.

The blog is here: http://python-history.blogspot.com/

Very interesting and enjoyable presentation from Stuart Williams on
"Python Scripting in the Enterprise", the story of how a large
corporation came to adopt Python as its enterprise scripting language --
by relying on evidence-based decision making and without shrill
fanaticism or overt Python advocacy. Thanks, Stuart!

Toward the end of last nights meeting, I offered to do a presentation on
setuptools[1]. However, I've decided that since a) setuptools isn't part
of the standard library and b) it is based on distutils[2] which *is* in
the standard library, that I would rather do my presentation on (some
parts of) distutils rather than on setuptools.

As yet we have no topic for February 25th. Suggestions?

Regards,
Syd
