Odd, I'm getting exactly the opposite.  Most people seemed to prefer
spam.parent as long as there are no major performance issues*.  If
people are saying they want spam.getParent() simply because of the
performance issue in the _current_ Python implementation, by all means
let me know and I'll help get the patch rolling!

(* other issues, such as encapsulation and API style, have been
addressed.)
