[XML-SIG] Follow-up on "minidom toxml() / Unicode problem"

Hi,

I just read about the May thread titled "XML: minidom toxml() 
does not work for non English files! :-(" after being hit by
the same problem (being unable to write UTF-8 files using
std.lib. minidom toprettyxml()...)

Can someone please try to summarize the recommended workaround, 
if there is any? Or is minidom/string/whatever in 2.2.1 in 
some sense "broken"? ;-)
