RFC Distributing bytecode compiled sources (.pyc)

Hello, we are currently considering distributing bytecode compiled sources (.pyc) in Pyodide both for the Python standard library and package wheels. This has the potential to significantly speed up the initialization time, but at the cost of loss of source code readability and less detailed exception tracebacks. See https://github.com/pyodide/pyodide/issues/3269 for more details. If you have any comments or concerns about this proposal, please respond here or in the linked issue. On an unrelated topic, we have been struggling with unsolicited mail on this mailing list in the past. I don't know why we have this problem and not other OSS mailing lists @python.org. For now, we have done what we could against it, and I'm hoping that was sufficient. If this problem persists, we may end up closing the mailing list, and switch to other communication channels. Synchronous sockets status?

Hi all, Is anyone working on adding synchronous sockets support in pyodide yet? If not, does anyone have opinions on how it should be done? I can see with support for shared memory across browsers now it would be easy enough to do it with that in JavaScript with a web worker and atomics.wait. The obvious alternative would be to make threading and synchronisation primitives work in python and do fetch calls in a thread. Has anyone built threaded pyodide yet? Does webassembly threading work in WebKit now? Any ideas how that would interact with JavaScript? Threading is obviously a heavier weight thing, but on the other hand I guess it would fix lots of problems in a way that a dedicated JavaScript solution wouldn't. Job offer: Porting tradingstrategy package to Pyodide

Hi all, I am a CEO, and long-time Python developer, of Trading Strategy - https://tradingstrategy.ai We are a new startup that builds open-source algorithmic trading solutions on Python. We offer both strategy backtesting and live trade execution on cryptocurrency markets. Currently, we have finished our seed round and the company is still in the product Minimum Viable Product build phase. For this, I would like to research the opportunity to run our client Python library directly in a web browser using Pyodide / JupyterLite. This would make it much easier for quant finance people, who are often not hardcore software developers, to access the beauty of Python-based data research. I would like to see if there are people in the Pyodide community who would like to work with us. The work would be subcontracted to a Gibraltar-based company and consist of creating a static HTML proof-of-concept example. I am happy to work with anyone from students to professional Python consultants. Pyodide sprint at PyCon US

Hello, we are organizing a Pyodide development sprint at PyCon US 2022 conference (https://us.pycon.org/2022/). This sprint will take place *May 2 to 5, 2022 in Salt Lake City, US*. It will happen 2 days during the conference sprints and 2 days after the conference. This will be an in person event, however remote participants are also welcome. This is an event where existing and new contributors can work on the project, on topics ranging from addressing existing issues, implementing new features, exploring new ideas, or adapting your existing projects to work with Pyodide. If you are interested in participating, please add your name to the list in https://github.com/pyodide/pyodide/wiki/PyCon2022-sprint Due to PyCon2022 rules this year, all those that participate in sprints in person must be registered to attend the conference, and attendees to the conference must provide proof of vaccination status. From what I was told, there can be an exception for people local to Salt Lake City regarding the conference registration requirement (see conference announcements). For information, PyCon US has travel grants, so those who might otherwise not be able to attend can. The deadline to apply is February 11, 2022. ANN Pyodide joins the Open Source Collective

Hello, a quick announcement that on the organizational side Pyodide joined the Open Source Collective (OSC) which would be able to act as project's fiscal host. This releases includes migration to Python 3.9.5, experimental Node.js support, support of ctypes, as well as many improvements of the JavaScript package and type translation API.
