I have made a simple test script: ``` #!python try: # Python 3 import tkinter except ImportError: # Python 2 import Tkinter as tkinter root = tkinter.Tk() font_families = root.tk.call("font", "families") print("There are %i font families:" % len(font_families)) for font_family in font_families: print("\t%s" % font_family) ``` With CPython under linux mint 17 i get a list of 95 font families. With PyPy (i used https://github.com/squeaky-pl/portable-pypy ) i get only this output: ``` There are 21 font families: fangsong ti fixed clearlyu alternate glyphs courier 10 pitch open look glyph bitstream charter song ti open look cursor newspaper clearlyu ligature mincho clearlyu devangari extra clearlyu pua clearlyu clean nil clearlyu arabic clearlyu devanagari standard symbols l gothic clearlyu arabic extra ``` The result is, that a tkinter GUI looks very ugly running with PyPy than with CPython. New issue 1865: cffi call keep alive bug https://bitbucket.org/pypy/pypy/issue/1865/cffi-call-keep-alive-bug Alex Gaynor: If you have code that's like `lib.some_call({"key": ffi.new("char[]", "abc")})` and multiple threads, sometimes your program will crash. The reason is that cffi does not correctly keep the `char[]` alive. In `_call()`, `convert_argument_from_object` will convert this to a struct, but then the `dict` is dead, and if it's collected the `char[]` will also be collected because nothing is keeping it alive.

By comparison, pypy-2.3.1 for example runs to completion. Originally reported by ywliu on issue #1855.

I have the packaging library (https://github.com/pypa/packaging) and as part of that it generates a ton of tests using ``pytest.mark.parametrize``. In total there are a little over 25k tests that come from a total of 45 actual functions. Running the tests under PyPy is massively slow. CPython runs the entire suite in 1-2 minutes while PyPy takes ~15 minutes (See: https://travis-ci.org/pypa/packaging/builds/34763838). Reproduction: ``` git clone https://github.com/pypa/packaging.git tox -e py27 # Fast, ~30s on my machine tox -e pypy # Slow, ~618s on my machine I tried running a OSX nightly but I got an unrelated error even trying to run the binary.

New issue 1861: Presence of __index__ method in class hides some __r operators https://bitbucket.org/pypy/pypy/issue/1861/presence-of-__index__-method-in-… mcesar: Hi all, this code: ``` #!python class oops: def __init__(self, val): self.val = val def __rmul__(self, other): if isinstance(other, str): other = int(other) return self.val * other a = oops(3) print((2 * a, '2' * a)) ``` when run returns: (6, 6) But if the _ _ index _ _ method is added to the class: ``` #!python class oops: def __init__(self, val): self.val = val def __rmul__(self, other): if isinstance(other, str): other = int(other) return self.val * other def __index__(self): return int(self.val) a = oops(3) print((2 * a, '2' * a)) ``` the output is: (6, '222') Seems that adding the _ _ index _ _ method to the class forces pypy to catch the * operator as the _ _ mul _ _ operator of the string, instead of the _ _ rmul _ _ of the oops. This happens in both 2.X and 3.X flavours of pypy. CPython returns (6, 6) in both cases (and also in 3.4 and 2.7 versions).

New issue 1859: windows translated -A module/thread/test segfaults pypy https://bitbucket.org/pypy/pypy/issue/1859/windows-translated-a-module-thre… mattip: this seems to be a shadowstack issue, since I've pretty much ruled everything else out :) * running pypy.exe --jit off pypy/test_all.py pypy/module/thread/test/test_thread.py crashes pypy.exe, so it is not a jit issue * The crash happens in AppTestThread.setupclass * printing i in the ```for i in range(1000)``` loop reliably crashes with i==957 * compiling with -Od or running the code outside pytest.py does not crash, maybe connected to the testing infrastructure adding another 100 or so calls to begin_thread * adding printf() in thread_nt.c indicates that the crash is not there, and that ``begin_thread`` is not returning -1 * running inside a debugger stops in interpreter/pyopcode ``handle_operation_error`` with an invalid ``self`` (frame) Responsible: mattip
