I would recommend you to start reading the section "Development process" of our contributors page: https://scikit-image.org/docs/stable/contribute.html#id2; it details the process on how to prepare and submit your contribution. I think you could start working on one of our issues, if you'd like. We have some of them labeled as "good first issue": https://github.com/scikit-image/scikit-image/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+l... , then you could learn how to contribute on a more "hands-on" approach.
