Still not sure about that, but rsync.net support has now confirmed that, indeed:

$ ssh ... borg --version 

gives the borg version running at the server :)

So from what I've read here and elsewhere, it seems the 1.2.7 client chokes for some operations on renamed archives from some old-version repos, at least for repo v0.29, but whatever (client or server) handles renaming in 1.2.7 doesn't induce the same issue(s) when renaming repos itself.

I think that's where we are...

If it is possible for a future version of borg upgrade to "just work" or not, as required, dealing idempotently with previous versions' issues, making any required checks and adjustments, that would be ideal.
