Hmm, I just stumbled across this "City of Chicago Greeter Program",
which could be useful both for visitors and for Chicagoans who'd like
to show newcomers around town:

It looks like greeters are specific to individual neighborhoods and
other special interest areas, which is nice--that way you get someone
who really knows the area (it's very hard for any one Chicagoan to
know the entire city like the back of their hand):
