Alessi.
Under the continuing leadership of Alessi, the project has created New
Dance communities of people fomr diverse cultures both with and without
disabilities.
Alito Alessi, Director of the DanceAbility Project, is internationally
known as a pioneering teacher and coreographer in the field of dance and
disability. He produces several annual workshops in Oregon which draw
students from all over the world. He also teaches and performs
DanceAbility work through the US, Europe, and South America, wtig both
disabled and able-bodied dancers. He has received choreographer’s award
from the Oregon Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The intention of the DanceAbility work is to build a community that
supports the creative expression of people with a wide range of physical
abilities. The work focuses on a teaching method that draws its material
from the group present in a given situation and teaches material that
isolates no one. People may choose not to participate, but not because
they are unable to do somethiing, but because as self-empowered
individuals they choose not to. Following one's own interest and desire
is a basic DanceAbility teaching.
