On Finding Ways of Being: Kinesthetic Empathy in Dance and Ecology
On Finding Ways of Being is a lecture performance; a theoretical and performative analysis of the potential for kinesthetic exchange with the environment as a mode of place-making in an urban landscape. Lecture, poetic ruminations, video projection and movement are employed to illuminate a few of several movement-based interventions I performed throughout New York City (solo) and in collaboration with others from iLAND (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art Nature and Dance). The full paper is being published as a chapter in The World A Stage: Performance on Behalf of the Environment, forthcoming from Lexington Press.

Tea & Talk about-
The Hut Project is a series of site-specific huts built by choreographer Jill Sigman from found and re-purposed materials. Equal parts visual installation, performance, community action, and cooking demonstration, Sigman’s huts raise questions about waste management, environmental sustainability, real estate, and home. They create temporary spaces for movement improvisation, community conversations, serving tea, and micro-agriculture, and aim to to open visitors to re-imagination of their environment. Hut #7 is currently under construction in the Williamsburg-Greenpoint part of Brooklyn. At the “Tea & Talk” Sigman creates a virtual hut environment and tells guests about the huts with video, images, and fresh herbal tea.

Wire Monkey Dance (WMD) and liveWire present springWIDEOpen, two weekends of dance theater, performance, video installation and live music, bringing together 15 local, national and international performance artists coming from as far away as Berlin, Germany and from Hartford, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia. Performances include interactive media and dance installations, innovative virtuosic dance, performance, live music, and video works. From b-boys to somatic super heroes, huts made from garbage to infrared projections, springWIDEOpen blasts open concepts of performance while illuminating the stages, high ceilings and secret corners of the gorgeous, and historic Tree Studio.
With a reputation for bringing provocative dance theater to the valley, Northampton’s 12-year-old Wire Monkey Dance (WMD) is stretching the boundaries of dance again co-curating performance that is part installation, part dance performance and part interactive technologies for the public. Questions of sustainability, the evolution of performance art, and public value of the virtuosic drove WMD and liveWire to invite innovative makers to present works in process and set works. Combined, artists presenting works have toured globally from Macau to Zagreb to Cape Verde, presented at prestigious national venues including Jacob’s Pillow, Dance Theater Workshop, PS 122, Joyce Soho, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the International Festival of Arts and ideas, the Bates Dance Festival, DUMBO dance festival and the 92nd street Y, among many other international venues and teach at many universities and performing arts high schools throughout America!
liveWire is a recently formed performance collective, geared toward supporting pioneering interdisciplinary performance work in Western Massachusetts. liveWire members Krista DeNio, Lani Nahele, Jennifer Polins, and Saliq Francis Savage, bring together decades of work in the fields of dance, theater, and interdisciplinary performance. As creators and educators, seeking to create innovative and sustainable interaction with the world around us, liveWire bridges the work and thinking of multiple fields, in the framework of the performance venue, to create artful and meaningful dialogue.
Wire Monkey Dance is known for it’s highly physical dance installations utilizing steel scaffolding and other industrial materials. Under the artistic direction of Saliq Francis Savage and Jennifer Polins, Wire Monkey Dance has a twelve-year roster of performances performing annually for the local coommunity at Tree Studios in Holyoke and touring internationally. Tours have included Jacob’s Pillow, Lincoln Center Out Of Doors, New York City's Dance Theater Workshop, Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts, the Saratoga Springs Dance Festival, the Ponderosa TanzLand Festival in Germany, Sun Yat Sen University, Taiwan and the Macau Fringe Festival and WACFEST in Macau, China.
