Well, that was the ticket !  I changed it to:

<framework>Python

And things build like a charm now, and no nasty hacks to darwin-tools!

One other question, what's the standard protocol for 
setting(DY)LD_LIBRARY_PATH so that I can pickup the boost libs? There 
seems to be pretty sparse documentation of this on the web.
