[Distutils] Installing data files

Hello!

I would like to ask for advice how to install data files that is used by the
modules or scripts in a package. I need to provide the path where some
template image files are installed, also in the case that the package is not
installed under sys.prefix. Studying the documents did not provide me an
answer and searching previous discussions about this issue left me with an
impression that this might not be supported in current distutils.

Is it possible to extract somehow within distutils whether an alternate
installation location was specified or do I need to resort to parsing the
commandline in my setup.py?
