Ah ha!  Your email address has a period in it; there was a bug that
caused an infinite loop in this case.

I presume this fixes the performance issues we've been seeing, too:
every time someone tried to register with a local part of an email
address that wasn't a valid plone username, we'd have lost a thread to
100% CPU land.
