[Image-SIG] Bacterial Colonies

Hello --

I'm interested in a Python programming problem based on measuring
certain properties of bacterial colonies that look like the attached image.
I've thought a bit about different ways to approach the following problem, 
but I can't come up with a solid way to count the 'spokes' that come out
from the center. Thanks in advance for any help!
