First cut or so of the 2.0betas had a very simple straight injection 
interface to the MTA (choice of SMTP or sendmail CLI).  As things have 
moved on this approach has caused problems (ie max number of recipients 
per MTA injection, need to queue messages under some circumstances, 
prevention of a deadly embrace with the MTA etc), and most of the old 
bulk mailer functionality is moving back in...
