If it's only a single specific message you want to make sure has
gone out, and you're not worried about the general problem, then the
answer is to watch the logs, as was suggested by someone else.
When Mailman says that it's done processing that message, then
you can change the subscriber list whenever you want, with the risks
you're already aware of regarding what may or may not happen with the
other messages that have come in during the meanwhile.
