Sorry to be butting in with a rather non-technical answer... but 
wouldn't the obvious solution be to gently persuade the announcer to 
upgrade from AOL v8 to AOL v9?

Versions 6, 7 and 8 can only send HTML. After Version 8 AOL bowed to 
pressure and reintroduced a plain text option.
