Are the archives (archives/private/<listname>/*) there?
Since you get a 404, I'm asuming this is a public archive so is there a
symlink archives/public/<listname> to archives/private/<listname>.
Is the archives/private directory either 'world searchable' (o+x) or
owned by the web server (see the warning box at
<http://www.list.org/mailman-install/node9.html>)?
Does your web server have the appropriate 'pipermail' alias, and can
the web server follow symlinks from the archives/public directory (see
<http://www.list.org/mailman-install/node10.html>)?
In any case, this would appear to be a problem with the Debian package
installation which might be better persued with Debian.
