[Matplotlib-devel] setting 'mathtext.fontset' appears to have no effect

I've been playing with setting matplotlib.rcParams['mathtext.fontset'.  As
far as I can tell, the value of this parameter has absolutely no effect.
Is this a known issue?  My code is attached.
