I've come up with an answer to my own question: track the page name 
(using macro.formatter.page.page_name). A change of name will obviously 
be detected by the first call in a page. Furthermore, this solution 
fulfills the criterion that I mentioned in my previous followup - that 
it should work at earlier releases.
