When Chris asked for a translation of his QBasic drawing code into
Python, I was about to answer "you need a little more boilerplate".

Marduk wants string formatting to work with arbitrary sequences
instead of tuples. It should not be required that all items in the
sequence are consumed by the format string. Hans Nowak proposes a nice
try-and-error approach.

also be achieved with Paul McGuire's pyparsing. Time to give it a try.
