Here is my source:
def truc ():
    line = ' hi \n'
    line1 = re.sub('$', 'hello', line)
    line2 = re.sub('$', 'you', line1)
    print line2

Here is what I get:

>>> trace.truc()
 hi hello
helloyou
>>>
