What would be potential consequences of it not working?

If it means that strange things may happen if you pass "U" to open, the
feature could be built, anyway.

Also, do you doubt that it *could* work (with sufficient modifications)
on all systems we care about? If so, users of these systems would need
to provide the necessary changes.
