Algoritm that'll find usable account names

Does anybody have any snippets of code that'll morph names ?

I.e., if some user, at my service, registered with the name John Doe
(ta-da) and subsequently got the name John.Doe at sweetservice.com, and some
other user, with the same name registered at the same service, could
get a different variant, for example JohnDoe at sweetservice.com ?
