Dear Mike, 

I could really use the same thing.
In my studies of this, so far I have learned that
there is an extension to X called XTEXT extension

Some docs are at the following:
/usr/doc/XFree86-doc-3.3.5/Xext/xtest.PS.gz
/usr/doc/XFree86-doc-3.3.5/Xext/xtestlib.PS.gz

Please let me know how things go. I would like 
to learn more about how you solve your problem.
