mxODBC on Windows 2000?

Has anyone been able to get the mxODBC module for Python to work properly with ActivePython on Windows 2000?  The reason I ask is because every time I try to execute a SQL command, the CPU usage goes up to 100% on my machine and the python shell is locked up.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.
