The most important modules

I've seen a few comments along the lines of "When you are a newbie it will
take a while to realize which the important modules are." As someone who
is in the middle of wading through Chapter 3 of the Library Reference, it
would be very helpful to know which ones are particularly worth
noting. (Presumably sys, (c)Pickle and shelve, from the ones I've so far
in the chapter - but what other treats are out there for me?)
As a general comment along these lines, I notice that as I become aware of
more of Python's capabilities, I find that previous bits of code can be
greatly simplified. Presumably this is a common experience?
Cheers,
Martyn
(becoming less of a newbie day-by-day)
P.S. Thanks to everyone (particularly Cameron Laird) who helped me out
earlier. I unexpectedly came into enough money to buy a couple of books
on Python - Lutz & Ascher's "Learning Python" and Grayson's "Python and
Tkinter Programming". Both are proving to be very useful - I especially
found that having been tinkering with Python for a few weeks before I
started reading, Lutz & Ascher managed to tell me almost exactly the
things I wanted to know. Whenever a question jumped into my head, they
seemed to answer it in the next paragraph.
