smtp.sendmail read receipt?

i think rfc 2298 is what you want -- the return-receipt-to header
and rfc1891 that others have suggested can get you notification on
when your message has been delivered to the recipients mailbox, but
not when it has been read.

i don't know of any mail user agents that support rfc 2298 though (not
that i know that many).
