why is there no more activity with this group

There have been thousands of posts in 2004.

Right now, mail.python.org (the server that mail for this group
goes through) is sick.  We're working on fixing it.  Before
long, comp.lang.python / python-list will be back up to its
typical 100+ messages per day.
