Also, thanks for taking the time to look into my question and to 
explain the inner workings a little (the C sprintf() function). I 
also tried a bunch of different format specifications and input 
values -- but couldn't determine anything definitive. It's nice 
to know that it wasn't just me.

If I find out anything more, I'll post back to the group.
